Elevated cholesterol levels should prompt us to lead a healthy lifestyle. The first step in this direction is to establish and follow a new diet. Elevated cholesterol can lead to many serious diseases, accumulating even for years in our blood vessels. The most dangerous consequence of a long-term state of elevated cholesterol is a heart attack.

Anti-cholesterol diet

Elevated cholesterol is usually the result of an inadequate daily diet. “Switching” to products that are healthier for our heart and circulatory system can work wonders here. Unfortunately, although over 70% of Poles struggle with elevated cholesterol, only one in three decides to radically change their diet to an anti-cholesterol diet.

What should not be eaten with high cholesterol?

  • First of all, you should give up meat, offal (kidneys, hearts, tongues) and other animal products, including eggs.
  • With elevated cholesterol, it is recommended to consume as little amount of saturated fatty acids as possible.
  • Butter and lard also highly increase levels of bad and total cholesterol.

Recommended products and dishes that you can eat

  1. Among the oils, it is recommended to use rapeseed oil or olive oil. Instead of butter, it is better to choose light margarine.
  2. Meat can be replaced with fish, which contain a lot of nutritional value and do not negatively affect cholesterol levels.
  3. It is also worth eating nuts and seeds of pumpkin, sunflower and other grains.
  4. The menu of a person trying to lower the level of bad cholesterol must not lack sesame. It contains life-giving phytosterols that inhibit the absorption of bad cholesterol throughout the digestive system.
  5. If you don’t eat meat, you may be deficient in protein. Therefore, it is worth consuming plant products that contain the most of it, i.e. chickpeas, lentils, beans or peas.
  6. Fresh vegetables are the most beneficial for the health of people fighting cholesterol. A very valuable ingredient that helps lower cholesterol is dietary fiber.
  7. Is it worth trying fruit? From time to time, of course, but you can’t overdo it with their consumption, because they have a lot of sugars. Among the fruits, red and orange ones, such as grapefruit and oranges, are especially recommended.
  8. When reaching for bread, it is worth choosing whole grain bread, which also contains a large amount of fiber.
