Manampy amin'ny fampihenana ny tebiteby sy ny fahaketrahana ve ny yoga?

Yoga classes help reduce the manifestations of anxiety and depression, scientists from Boston University have proven. It is quite possible that now this practice will be included in the list of recommendations of doctors and will help many people feel better.

The practice of yoga, which became popular in the West only a few decades ago, is already recognized by scientists as an effective way to reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety. A new study from the Boston University School of Medicine confirms once again that yoga and breathing exercises can indeed reduce these symptoms both in the short term and in the long term (cumulative effect appears within three months).

The results of the project, published in the journal Psychiatric Practice, clearly show that yoga can be useful as an additional tool in the treatment of depressive disorders.

A group of 30 patients with clinical depression was randomly divided into two parts. Both were engaged in Iyengar yoga and breathing exercises, while for three months the first part of the group had 123 hours of classes, the second – 87 hours.

The results of the experiment were expected, but impressive: already in the first month, the quality of sleep in both groups improved significantly. The subjects began to feel more calm and positive, and physical exhaustion, symptoms of anxiety and depression were significantly reduced.

“Usually we give patients drugs in different doses to affect the body in different ways. In this case, we followed the same concept, but used yoga, ”explains psychiatrist Chris Streeter, author of the project.

“The new, evidence-based data is helping to get more people into yoga, which is a good strategy for improving their health and well-being,” said study co-author Marisa M. Silveri, a neuroscientist.

Perspectives for Patients

According to statistics, about 8 million people in Russia suffer from depression.1. If the patient went to a specialist and was diagnosed, he has every chance of recovery. Counseling (often with the help of cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques) and taking medications strictly as directed by a doctor can help treat depression.

Scientists from the US, where one in seven adults suffer from depression, have already proven that combining therapy and medication is more successful than any other treatment. And while further studies with more participants will be very useful to explore the benefits of yoga, it has already become clear that adding this practice to the treatment regimen can be very, very beneficial.
